Misc. Notes

When he was a youth his uncle Billy Temple, who lived at Rose Mount gave his mother Hillsborough, her ancestral home, and the family had moved there in the eighteen thirties. While a student at Rappahannock Academey, he became desperately ill with pneumonia. He was not a church member, but, in view of his serious condition, he wished to become one and insisted on being baptized by immersion. The doctor said he might as well be humored becuase he was going to die anyway, and arrangements were made for him to be baptized from his sick bed. Immediately after his baptism he began to improve and soon regained his health and was remarkabley healthy during the rest of his life. When he had completed his education, he came to Walkerton to live, became a partner in the mercantile business of Albert G. Sale and owned jointly with him the 104 acres which had formerly stood in Mr. Sale’s name. It is possible that he lived where Mr. Henry P. Taylor lived as it was part of this tract. In May 1812 he became postmaster of Walkerton VA; however, on his father’s death in 1844 he sold his share in the business to his partner, deeded to him his interest in the land, resigned as postmaster and returned to Hillsborough where he lived and farmed the rest of his life. He remained a devout Christian, and in his final illness called his children to his bedside and told them that he wanted his son Charles to have family prayers and read a chapter of the Bible every day, and if he became unable to do this, he wanted his son William Todd Henley to take his place. After Charles Henly left Hillsboro, William Todd Henley did take his brother's place and continued to have family prayers as long as he lived.22
