Misc. Notes
Note in a local paper: Miss Alice Walker gave a delightful tea last Wednesday night to a few of her friends. Those included Misses Bessie Gwathmey, ??? Ryland, Bettie Henley, ???? Walker, Ellen Richardson, Gertrude and Garland Councill, and Messrs, James Lewis, Alfred Gwathmey, Robert and Carroll Caldwell, Harvey McGeorge, Gordon Walker, Dr. F. O. Mooklar and Walter Wilson. Games were played during the first part of the evening . After the games and elegant supper was served. They table was prettily decorated, and the menu all the fastidious could desire.
Another description in a local paper: charmingly vivacious and irresistably enchanting.
Called “Miss Alice” in later life.
From B. Bagby’s “Recollections” p. 27: Alice has recently told me of an incident that I think is worth relating to show the relationship of master and slave. When Aunt Bettie Walker Henley, Alice’s grandmother died, her property was put up at public auction. Among other things sold was a candlestick table. My mother and Alice bid against each other for this table, and the auctioneer finally knocked it off to Alice; whereupon, Mama came to her and said, “Alice, I wanted that table because I remember that my father’s (Temple Walker) Bible always rested on it and every night he read aloud from it and had family prayers, with the Negroes as well as the whites present. As I was bidding, I thought that the only use I had for it was to place it in one of the guest rooms of the hotel, here it would be used often as a table to hold bottles of whiskey, glasses, sugar and gambling chips. Of course, I did not want to see it so desecrated, so I stopped bidding, as I knew you would take better care of it than I.
