Engaged in farming in King & Queen County until 1889, when he moved to Tappahannock and became a representative of the Virginia Fire & Marine Insurane Company in that region. A confederate veterna, he saw service all through the Civil War as captain of Company K, Thirty-fourth Virginia Volunteer Infantry, and participated in the hard-fought battles of Seven Pines and the Crater. In the first named his command lost twenty-five per cent in wounded and killed. He was a member of the Church of the Disciples at Smyrna, King and Quen County, Virginia, and a strong supporter of the church; and for many years was superintendent of the Sunday School. The Masonic fraternity had in him a zealous member. A well-educated man, he had been given excellent advantages in his youth, and attended Stevensville Academy, Virginia Military Institute and Richmond College, and his knowledge made him a leader in many things. As before stated, he was active in Sunday School work, and his efforts soon outgrew local bounds, an in 1885 he was made state superintendent of Sunday Schools. He was the first of any religious denominations to organzie State Sunday School Institutes in the State of Virginia, and he never lost an opportunity to forward this most important work in behalf of the rising generation.
