Oct 1809 he moved to Richmond Va. An article from the Shore Leather Reporter (1869) stated that wehn he came to Richmond he had a wife and two children (I had never heard this fact nor seen any other reference to it) His First wife died some years prior to his second marriage. Began his business in Richmond making boots and shoes to measure. Soon added a retail store and then a jobbing business. In 1814 he took in James H. Gardner as a clerk and in 1819 as a partner in the wholesale boot and shoe firm - then named Hubbbard and Gardner. In 1829 Ambrose Carlton was admitted to the firm. Thereafter called Hubbard, Gardner & Carlton.
Second marriage to Ann Phillips in Lynn Ma.
In 1854-1856 the Hubbard’s home was built at 1104 E. Broad. This house and all its furnishings were left to Anna Hubbard Gardner (Reynolds).
In 1860 he was worth upwards of half a million dollars but he lost leavily during the Civi Was as a result of the burning of his stores and cotton warehouses, bank stock that became worthless & from unpaid debts, etc.
He was the Treasurer of Monumental Church which he had aided in erecting.
