Misc. Notes
A story is told that during the Civil War a group of Yankee soldiers entered Walkerton at the time when all the men of the village, all elderly, were in the post office. Some Confederate soldiers who entered Walkerton about the same time fired on a small group of Yankees, wounding the officer in charge. “Miss Lucy” had been watching from a window in her uncle’s house where she lived. As the man fell, she ran inton the yard and shouted, “You stop that shooting! This man is wounded.” Those who knew “Miss Lucy” can almost see and hear her doing this. She ran to the wounded man and was soon joined by the doctor, who was among the men in the post office. She got a basin and water and they treated the Yankee’s wound. About this time some of the Confederate privates appeared and demanded the Yankee officer’s sword. He refused to give it to them, saying, “I will surrender my sword to this beautiful young lady”; he did, and the soldiers led him off. For days Miss Turner refused to give up the sword, but finally said she would give it to a Confederate officer; when Captain Campbell Fox came he was given the sword. After the war it was carried to Arkansas by members of the Fox family who moved to that state.
