Misc. Notes
Tribute to Elizabeth Hutchinson in the Bulletin of the King & Queen Historical Society published in 1989:
Elizabeth Henley Hutchinson was born in King and Queen County at Hillsborough, an 18th century seat established by Humphrey Hill, a public spirited philanthropist who provided schooling for children of parents unable to pay for it. She was steeped in history by a family who helped make it, beginning with a forefather in the Continental Army. When she married John D. Huthinson, and moved about five miles up the county to Westwood, she took her love of history with her. Although making a home for her husband and children was her vocation, her avocation was collecting material about the county and systematically keeping it in voluminous files. Actually, she didn’t keep it for she shared it with any and everone who was doing research on the county. Instead of going to a library - there was none - they went to Elizabeth Hutchinson who unhesitantingly turned all her information over to them without asking for any recognition. What was started as research for family and friends became a full scale project when she was placed in charge of the Sesquicentennial celeration of the establishment of King and Queen County in 1691. Later her research was the basis for the book, Old Houses of King and Queen County, Virginia. She prepared and published a detailed map of homes, churches, and schools of the county and as a consequence the sites of those no longer in existence are not lost. This Society (King and Queen Historical Society), King and Queen County, Elizabeth Henley Hutchinson’s family, and friends have much to be grateful for in her gently, helpful, and useful life. She made this county more aware of its heritage by the permanent record she has given us. (Besty Fleet)
