After marriage lived at Old Place next to Locust Grove, later called Orange Grove.
Gave “Oakland to their son Benjamin Whatcoat McLelland and his wife Mary Evelyn Quarles McLelland as a wedding gift. Later Oakland was sold by McLelland to SC Vaughn in 1898 and then to John Thomas (JT) Barefoot, Sr in 1903.
Was a Methodist circuit rider who is said to have preached at Pace’s Church in 1780.
As a Methodist minister united John Walker and Margaret Shepherd in marriage at Shepherd’s Chapel in 1829.
Thoroughly dedicated to the cause of Methodism and its beliefs; devoutly religious parents, Hezekiah and Mary McLelland named all but one of their children for ministers or bishops of the Methodist faith.
